Matthew 4:4 (ESV)
But he answered, 'It is written, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”'
Talk About It
Jesus was very hungry after not eating for forty days in the wilderness. When the devil told Him to turn stones into bread, Jesus knew it wasn’t right to use His power just to satisfy His hunger instead of trusting God. Jesus remembered that knowing and following God’s Word is even more important than food.
We all have needs and things we want—like snacks, toys, or attention. But the Bible teaches us that nothing is more important than hearing and obeying God’s Word. Just as bread keeps our bodies alive, God’s Word keeps our heart and spirit healthy and close to Him.
Sometimes we think we need something right away, but what we really need most is God, His love, and His Word. When we pay attention to the Bible and do what God says, He fills us up with joy, peace, and strength—things no food or toy can give. Let’s remember to “feed” our hearts on what God says every day!
For Parents to Explain
Dear God, thank You for giving us the Bible—Your Word—to help guide us and fill us. Help us want You most of all, and learn to listen to what You say. Amen.
Family Activities
Lunchbox Verse
- Write today’s anchor verse or another favorite Bible verse on a card or sticky note.
- Place it in your lunchbox, backpack, or somewhere you’ll see it during the day.
- When you see the note, thank God for giving you something even better than food—His Word!
- Share at dinner how God reminded you of His truth.
Spiritual Food Placemats
- Using large paper, make placemats and decorate with drawings of “spiritual food”—Bibles, hearts, crosses, etc.
- Write, “God’s Word feeds my heart!” on your placemats.
- Use them at meals this week.
- Talk about one thing from the Bible that encouraged you each day.
Family Prayer
Invite each person to thank God for His Word, and ask Him to help you remember to turn to Him first, before anything else.
